BRRC stands for Belgian Road Research Centre, but in Dutch we talk about OCW: Opzoekingscentrum voor de Wegenbouw. They have a special status as a collective research center for the road construction sector.
Their mission consists of three pillars: research on materials, safety, mobility, surfaces, etc., advice to members and stakeholders, and the organization of training courses. BRRC’s clients are mainly road contractors and road authorities, which in Belgium are the regions, municipalities and so-called public-private partnerships. Quite an extensive set.
Our mission
Three years ago BRRC had embarked on a digitization project and had a new Drupal website created by a major player on the market. But at the end of the project, support turned out to be very expensive and really only feasible for very large web projects. The firm that had delivered the website then referred them to Aperta.
During the first contact, the connection with Luc (Managing Partner) was immediately right. BRRC was looking for an agency that was happy with their order purchase where they could be treated in a more personal way. There also had to be enough expertise in-house to solve BRRC’s problem.
In addition, the organization also needed a portal. In fact, BRRC has some applications available to their visitors. These were already existing applications designed not by Aperta but by BRRC itself such as maps on which important information can be found. Before, there was no central place where visitors could easily access all existing applications. A portal site (with login) that would serve as a central hub was needed so that visitors could easily and quickly navigate to all other applications.
Our Solutions
Aperta provided optimizations to the design of the current website (Drupal). Font sizes were changed and a clear menu structure was created. Aperta also took care of the general styling of the website. The URL structure had to be optimized as well.
Aperta also designed a portal (geoportal) on which visitors with a login can consult the applications of BRRC. Single Sign-On (SSO) software and Keycloak were used for the login page.
A homepage with a clear menu was provided from which visitors can easily navigate to the applications BRRC offers (being directory, catalog, applications and resources). The portal was given the same look and feel as BRRC’s main site so design was kept to a minimum in this project.
Results
Aperta created a regular and a portal website for BRRC. Our in-house expertise allowed us to tackle the project in a way other partners could not.
